Some of the music we're working on for our fall concert
As I may or may not have discussed previously, I am a member of the North Star Community Band here in Kansas City. Presently, I'm playing 3rd clarinet, as there are too many flutes (12 this season, I think?). For those of you interested in concert band/symphonic/orchestral music, here are a few of the selections we're working on for our Fall concert. I'll post more of them later as I find decent recordings for the various pieces.

  • A Festival Prelude by Alfred Reed - For an Alfred Reed piece, it's remarkably easy -- until you realize how hard it is to balance. My favorite bits are around 1:33 and 2:16 (letters D and E on the score...)
  • Lake Zurich Celebration by Douglas Akey - At first, I thought "what a lame ending", but it grows on you after a few listens -- except the last note, which just kind of goes "blarghth". If I were the director, I'd have rehearsed that last note to cut off much shorter to echo the theme as it's played at the beginning. I realllllly like measures 38-45 (the horns at 1:07) -- our french horns played that section so beautifully at our last rehearsal, I actually teared up. >.>
  • First Suite in E♭ for Military Band by Gustav Holst - In case you don't know the name Holst, he's the world-famous composer of The Planets suite. As one might expect from Holst, this piece isn't easy. My favorite is the third movement, March, which starts at about 7:44 in this recording.

For reference, these recordings are professional (probably originally from the music publisher) and are definitely not our band. We're not quite that good.

Heh. I think I've played that first one. :D Of course as I was playing bass it's not like I remember the part or anything as they're all about the same <_<
